I walked quietly in the courtyard of the guild. It was a rainy day, my mind was thinking hard, deciding things was not easy. My body was uncompromised with my thinking at that time because I was really tired, confused, and not thinking clear the situation around me made this mind wondering about what do I want for people, what is the priority about work, life and love. This situation is happening in one project in one sports complex in Jakarta. There are 5 conditions happening that made me leave the project after we finished the design.
So there was a story when I was in the meeting with several architects and operator of the complex, which means discussing the project with deep thoughts and transparency because it is a public project. I asked the professionalism of being an architect to the parties because the first, of course that we need brief, and we need the standard operation of procedure of the sports complex. There is not any of that kind of thing, the brief was poorly prepared by verbal and the design was in the need to finish in several days, it’s like doing sprint, and I was ready with my team to answer the brief. I thought that it was normal for doing something like there is no schedule and there is no initial budget in a public project, the project was started in the beginning of March as far I can recall my memory. Each week became very disorganised, there was no proper brief, the discussion about the budget was not with chemistry. The intent of the project was very heroic in a way that there is no initial budget, and there is no schedule, that is the first and that is the second, and I still think, it is okay, I did it because of the dedication for this architect profession. That is the first and the second.
I was thinking and asking about the responsibility becoming the architect, that in the public project, the selection need to be fair, and judged by the jury, or at least I hope being selected meaning by capability not by because I know some people in the league. I hope that there was a letter, or public announcement, because by having that, people can start an open judgement, I still think it is okay, I did it because the dedication for this profession. That is the third. Then, The project was exercised in two and half months already and using our resources, I was exhausted and my team was exhausted, we didn’t have the resource anymore to work on that project which has cost us 100 million in pay bill and thousands of working time in the team. The three conditions still happened, no budget, no fixed schedule, no public announcement. I was thinking how can I pay the bill, so I need to find projects, calling for friends who can give us work. They were glad to support us, and we can run our projects.
Then, I was called in one afternoon that tomorrow we have to attend a meeting, and there is only very short day to review the documents, the budget prepared by others. The drawing needs to be prepared consists of structure, mechanical, and architecture in the level of working drawing with no budget, and we need to review and prepare. At the end, I as the architect need to sign to that documents. There is small response among the team member of architects, it’s been said that we don’t complain, we just do the work, and everything needs to be done. I was thinking if we were given only 1 – 2 days to review the document, and the situation always happening like this, is it the right way to do the job ? Can I be responsible for this document ? Have we completely checked it ? or Am I in the middle of the politic’s ripple ?
I remember one discussion with David, he said “You need to drop that project Realrich”, my friend, David talked to me in one evening in WhatsApp. “There is no need to sacrifice for you office and your family, this is not your battle, this is the battle of more senior architect who has established, but you are such elves kind like what Ary said” he mocked me. I also remember watching a video prepared by Anis in Omah in Glenn Murcutt’s interview at the end of the interview,
he said: “If you feel it’s not right, and don’t do it.” That is the fourth, there is a huge risk for sacrificing family and my dear firm looking at previous sports complex which came to hand of government corruption watch.
The fifth is about chemistry, there are well said words that we can be the success because of people around us. If there is no budget, no schedule, no honour, huge risk, and it still can be ok, if there is good chemistry, being backed up by good people, good clients, and full of positive energy, far from the blame game.
I discussed with the associates, and they told me that they weren’t happy we were experiencing this project, I tried to explain that It was my first time handling this kinda project, and I was so sorry for experiencing this, and trying to have a better condition in the office. I was so deeply sorry and was so sad because I didn’t like to disappoint them. I thought they need time, and I need time to recover. I talked to the designers, and seems they were okay with it, even though I knew that they were disappointed as well. It’s never been easy. After that, I told Septrio one of my left wing, my intention, he said something that made realise the priority. “Big brother, there are many people here to be taken care other than working on that project”
So finally my walk in the guild was over, In the name of my professionalism, I have done my best and finished the design, and I quit that project because the priority, Laurensia, Miracle, and my dear office, the advisors, the associates, designers, the supervisors, the builders, the librarians I love them, and I care about them. at that time it was 2 am in the middle of the night, Laurensia woke up, and I told her that I dropped the project, she said: “I am happy.” I felt blessed to be surrounded by them, As what the priority was experienced, the true value of professionalism experienced, what can I expect more ! I have learnt so much in this process. God Bless you all.
This is the song for boy and daugher who is innocent and creating lullaby of beautiful life.
There was a story …
Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.
Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.
Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she hastily replied.
“Look closer”, he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.
He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.
Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.
He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity-the boiling water.
However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.
The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.
However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.
“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”
In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is how you choose to react to it and what you make out of it. Life is all about leaning, adopting and converting all the struggles that we experience into something positive.
Situated in the increasingly crowded gated community at West Jakarta, Indonesia, the 110 sqm design architecture office “RAW architecture” occupies a 150 sqm in 375 sqm plot of land and built at the periphery and inside main house’s garage. Reflected by its name, RAW architecture office, the finishes is bare and using natural material. Size-wise it is extremely efficient, and relatively small, but its dotted exposed plywood facade combined with exposed concrete, black painted wall gives it a distinctive look yet privacy from outside the gated neighbourhood.
The office is divided by 2 main structure located at the garden and the garage of the existing house. The first structure is meeting space which made by plywood structure located at outdoor The office has one meeting room dedicated for OMAH library, which is made by plywood which housed all of the architecture books, OMAH is community based library and sometimes is used for hosting architecture talks and discussion. OMAH is made by plywood forming an arch as its geometry, This 2.4 m x 8.0 m wide span arch pavillion is made entirely from prefabricated plywood. The office was built by local craftsmen. The design was prefabricated in the workshop by creating 120 (200 mm x 400 mm x 600 mm ) boxes, and 120 leaning 3 equal trapezoid boxes for arch modulethe detail is exercised on spot by the plywood by bolt ,ring, and hand in time of 1.5 week construction.
The fabricated system is designed to be built within 2 weeks accommodating efficiency, affordability, movability as temporary structure without using many people and can be built by hand with minimum tools. You can see omah’s program in here http://www.omahlibrary.com
the second structure is working space located at the garage of the main existing house. The office space is designed based on efficiency to create intimate feeling for designers working on intense architecture projects. The working space has no receiving area, no permanent wall. A simple foyer and a big openingwith generous footwear storage- guests are to take off and store theirs there before entering-precede the lounging area. After the entrance, the separation between technical and designer also takes some importance its final layout is the result of few adjustments based on the designer and technical’s domestic habits. The only enclosed space in the first story is administration room study, which doubles as a office storage. The second story mezanine area is more private spaces to store vast material library, and some drinks for chill out time.
RAW has been arranging summer architecture fellowship program which invites 50 people per year in South East Asia to be trainee, learning skill of programming, designing space, and more is to understand the local craftsmanship available developed in the office. http://raw.co.id/summerarchitectureworkshop/
The office shows example of small home office in Jakarta tries to explore design in its space situated in very limited space in Jakarta.
RAW is like a roseto that believe on the workshop between the craftsmen and designer for having the best solution in the design, I want to create roseto that is intimate, fun and breaking the boundary to create innovation as much as we can.”

The project offers the design of a house, perhaps is the most interesting outcome for the RAW Architecture and process brings together the owner and the architect in a unique and mutually supporting relationship. The Bare Minimalist house is one of several projects undertaken with the first client who I met. The Client, Charles Wiriawan is a naturalist person house demand for one natural house for his first owned home. Early discussions focused on discussion of the program, a definition of naturalist house and budget constraint. The discussions were latterly distilled into a series of ecological approach and solution in narrow lot space, 8m x 24m. The result is a fusion of bold massing avoid the orientation to the west side building by creating one narrow building which allow fresh air circulate from outside – to inside the building.
Developed in response to the local tropical climate, the concept for Bare Minimalist House has been sensitive to seasonal sun path; high humidity levels prevailing winds, area temperatures and precipitation rates specific to the location. Directional wind profiles and solar exposure have been used to help determine the facade design and external building form to achieve lower thermal loads and opportunities for open balconies and natural ventilation. The house is north-south-East orientated. The living and dining area are located on the north side facing the open space and 2 bedrooms, the master bedrooms to the South-North-East. Each bedroom has a terrace, balcony or veranda. The south-facing veranda spaces have been designed to maximise the useable area in the house. They are activated by opening the 2.85-metre-wide, full-height sliding windows covered by sun shading to several faces that exposed to direct sunlight and by closing an internal curtain, which acts as a thermal curtain. This prevents heat penetrate during whole wet and dry season in hot humid tropical monsoon climate. One void connects each of the floor plan and allow air stacking effect in the house allow 24 hours fresh air flow in the building.
The glass area with external shading is maximised to the south to gain passive solar energy during colder periods. The solid areas of the north side are clad with ceramic tiles in a colour to match the bricks of the existing grain store buildings opposite. District heating is provided for heating; rainwater is collected and distributed to the nearby canal.
Bare Minimalist House will also be a green building in a more literal sense. The top of the house as roof terrace and the ground level will be green spaces, introducing planting and trees to the ground, upper ground, top of the building, and canopy area, irrigated naturally via a rainwater harvesting system.

Last few months, we worked on one prestigious project, that made me mulled. It’s a project which consists of several international consultants, builders, and owner. It has high standard of the way building operates. High standard means a condensed manual consists of hundreds pages for architect to read before working on this project and intense interaction among each parties. There is also high level of technical issues because of project’s nature.
The contractor has been asking clarifications until, for us, it’s not necessary to ask every little step to architect because every information is in the construction drawing. at that time I tried to delegate the job to my fellow staffs, partners because of the circumstances that i had to travel to outside Jakarta. The coordination among consultants, builders, and owner went so bad, so the project did not run very well, there were lacking of coordinations, the team had very low chemistry and it seems that project manager was confused about what’s going on. The blaming game began. I felt it’s unnecessary, and thought that we would drop this project to save our position while our position was still safe.
My mind was wondering about path of life, the raindrops, the fear of becoming someone to be blamed, and the risk of being the care taker. I had to slept in the morning and had difficulty to sleep for several days, Miracle cried in the night time, Laurensia said, “miracle can feel, that his father is in trouble, and has many problem in his mind.”. But, I tried to ask myself, for this project which keep bothered my mind, do I want to quit ? do we want to stop ? off course, there will be comfort zone, but come on, the problem just arise, and suddenly you want to stop. Things became very difficult, because of blaming game began, everybody has fear to action, to take lead, if you take the lead,if something goes wrong, you will be blamed. I was in the fear, I tried to ask my fellow friends, nobody there,
I always remember what Laurensia said to me, when i was down, “Honey, if you want to get stronger, you have to face it, I know you can do it. ” ” I know it is very difficult to face it, meaning that you have to take a risk, but isn’t it same that the time that you came to Indonesia , back from London, or Sydney , or the moment you lost your firm, you finally re run it again. ” We have faced this kinda thing.
Then, after that , I decided, and woke up in the morning, 3 am, read the manual, and reviewing the documents, and start calling clients, consultants, and start to clarify the miscommunication and helping other people in the big team which consists of like 7 parties. Several days were spent in the coordination and clarifications, it surprisingly followed with such a welcoming response from consultants, owners, operators, and the tension was dropped, we started to solve problem and acting like dream team. What I learnt from this process, is simple act, helping others while taking risk to be blamed is giving us, at least for me, happiness, and I feel so grateful because of taking this project, and having this great challenge.
The second story, I had to move to our new home. Our house, named The guild. The guild was still on construction, and we had to move before the house is ready, the boxes were everywhere in the house. Laurensia was stressed in several days, and for our miracle, the dust was much everywhere in the guild , and the bedroom was quite dirty. If Laurensia, Miracle, and me need to move, the office which is located in the garage will also need to be moved, because my work nature which is always overtime in the daily week. We had spent several days for packing and moving our stuffs and whole office, the designers, technicals, admin, whole office family helped much in moving all of the thing and made the guild ready as much as they can.
We finally moved at one bright Sunday evening, in an unready condition, imperfect, or ongoing in construction. We felt blessed, suddenly the situation changed, suddenly we were so happy. We just realised that we were in our new home,
how we should grateful for all of the process.
… I love you Laurensia and Miracle, thank you for all of the office family who helped the moving process, welcome to our home, have a great day for all of you, bless you all. :) look at them they are so happy, and miracle so cute, hopefully he can walk in next few months, so he can explore, new world, new imagination in his life.
